I'm requesting help from anyone that can help with a session that I will be hosting in the coming weeks.

I'm going to pursuade people to bring in their computers, and then install a Linux distro at the same time.

My event will be bias towards development with Linux, as many people who finish the year 1 programming course have never used Linux to develop with. I'll also cover the major differences between Windows, MacOs and Linux, and the risks of installing it before they do.

I'm most likely to be installing Ubuntu, but my preference would be for open Suse 10.3 (my distro).

I have 10 32-bit CDs and 5 64-bit CDs of Ubuntu, and have ordered more. We prob need a selection of different disros for people to choose.

The event will be on a wednesday, and may coincide with Ruben's forthcoming Mozilla event. Mozilla may even be sending us a large box of swag to give out!

If you can help in any way, by helping or just by asking/telling/ordering people to come along it'll be helpful. Just comment after this post, tell me in person (if you know me that is), or drop me an email to siu06asc@rdg.ac.uk.

Thanks!

Microsoft makes a covenant not to sue Novell for patent infringment. You would have thought that Novell paid for this "service", but no Mircosoft is paying Novell for the right not to sue!!!!

Are we going to see a M$ patent campaign soon?

Will this "help" Microsofts campaign for software patents in Europe?

Has Novell sold its soul? (Novell doesn't even own the IP of most of the software ion SUSE anyway. It's GPL code from other open source projects...)

hello,

For anyone playing with linux and poss. doing any modules on networking, you might find the following tutorial I wrote on another forum quite interesting! (or really boring :-p) but it explains briefly a clever little trick they put into iproute 2, where using iptables (another topic altogether) you can set packets to 'queue' then pick them up in your own c program.. You can then accept, drop or MODIFY(!!!) network packets on the fly. Of course this is completely useless for 80% of firewalling examples, because iptables does most things, but you can use it for packet analysis etc. If anyone has any q's ask, this does work.

Have fun,

Ant

heres the link: http://forum.dedipower.com/showthread.php?t=81
