            <description><![CDATA[Well my PBL for programming has been viewed and marked.&nbsp; I had fun making my project Space Ace!!!&nbsp; It was the first time that I have dealt with creating the graphical part of a game and dealt with the rendering of same.&nbsp; It was much easier than I thought it would be using allergo and makes me want to look directly at the DirectX libraries which I have only used for data access inthe past.]]></description>

They program right down to<br />&nbsp; the bare metal. If it was hard to write, it should be<br />&nbsp; hard to understand and even harder to modify.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#39;t draw flowcharts. Only effeminate programmers use more parentheses<br />&nbsp; than actual code.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#39;t use Pascal, BLISS, Ada, or any of those sissy-pinko computer<br />&nbsp; science languages. Strong typing is a crutch for people with weak<br />&nbsp; memories.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Never work 9 to 5. If any real programmers are around at 9 a.m.,<br />&nbsp; it&#39;s because they were up all night.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#39;t play tennis or any other sport that requires a change of<br />&nbsp; clothes. Mountain climbing is OK though, and real programmers often<br />&nbsp; wear climbing boots to work in case a mountain should suddenly spring<br />&nbsp; up in the middle of the machine room.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#39;t like the team programming concept. Unless, of course, they<br />&nbsp; are the Chief Programmer.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Have no use for managers. Managers are a necessary evil. Managers<br />&nbsp; are for dealing with personal bozos, bean counters, senior planners,<br />&nbsp; and other mental defectives.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#39;t drive clapped out Mavericks. They prefer BMWs, Lincolns, or<br />&nbsp; pick-up trucks with floor shifts. Fast motorcycles are highly regarded.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Like vending machine popcorn. Coders pop it in the microwave oven.<br />&nbsp; Real programmers use the heat given off by the CPU. They can tell what<br />&nbsp; job is running just by listening to the rate the corn is popping.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Know every nuance of every instruction and use them all in every<br />&nbsp; real program. Puppy architects won&#39;t allow execute instructions to<br />&nbsp; address another execute as the target instruction. Real programmers<br />&nbsp; despise such petty restrictions.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#39;t bring brown bag lunches to work. If the vending machine sells<br />&nbsp; it, they eat it. If the vending machine doesn&#39;t sell it they don&#39;t eat<br />&nbsp; it. Vending machines don&#39;t sell quiche.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; An engineer, a mathematician, and a computer programmer are driving<br />&nbsp; down the road when the car they are in gets a flat tire.&nbsp; The engineer<br />&nbsp; says that they should buy a new car. The mathematician says they should<br />&nbsp; sell the old tire and buy a new one.&nbsp; The computer programmer says they<br />&nbsp; should drive the car around the block and see if the tire fixes itself.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Assembler programs are written with short abbreviations called<br />&nbsp; MNEMONICS, in other words instead of writing GOTO, the programmer<br />&nbsp; writes JMP or even BRA (branch).<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; These instructions are frequently abbreviated into total<br />&nbsp; incomprehensibility. Of course, we all know that abbreviations are<br />&nbsp; arbitrary.&nbsp; Anyone who has spent any time programming in assembler<br />&nbsp; knows that all computers can be programmed using an undocumented set<br />&nbsp; of instructions.&nbsp; Frequently when an error is made writing a program<br />&nbsp; in assembler a user can actually see the program executing the<br />&nbsp; undocumented instructions. Even though it does not work, how does it feel?<br /><br /><br /><br />&nbsp; The Lesser-known Programming Languages<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; SIMPLE<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SIMPLE is an acronym for Sheer Idiot&#39;s Monopurpose Programming<br />&nbsp; Language Environment. This language, developed at the Hanover College<br />&nbsp; for Technological Misfits, was designed to make it impossible to write<br />&nbsp; code with errors in it. The statements are, therefore, confined to<br />&nbsp; BEGIN, END and STOP. No matter how you arrange the statements, you<br />&nbsp; can&#39;t make a syntax error. Programs written in SIMPLE do nothing<br />&nbsp; useful. Thus they achieve the results of programs written in other<br />&nbsp; languages without the tedious, frustrating process of testing and<br />&nbsp; debugging.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; LITHP<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This otherwise unremarkable language is distinguished by the absence<br />&nbsp; of an &quot;S&quot; in its character set; users must substitute &quot;TH&quot;. LITHP is<br />&nbsp; said to be useful in protheththing lithtth.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; SLOBOL<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SLOBOL is best known for the speed, or lack of it, of its compiler.<br />&nbsp; Although many compilers allow you to take a coffee break while they<br />&nbsp; compile, SLOBOL compilers allow you to travel to Bolivia to pick the<br />&nbsp; coffee. Forty-three programmers are known to have died of boredom<br />&nbsp; sitting at their terminals while waiting for a SLOBOL program to<br />&nbsp; compile. Weary SLOBOL programmers often turn to a related (but<br />&nbsp; infinitely faster) language, COCAINE.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; SARTRE<br />&nbsp; Named after the late existential philosopher, SARTRE is an extremely<br />&nbsp; unstructured language. Statements in SARTRE have no purpose; they just<br />&nbsp; are. Thus SARTRE programs are left to define their own functions.<br />&nbsp; SARTRE programmers tend to be boring and depressed, and are no fun at<br />&nbsp; parties.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; C-<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This language was named for the grade received by its creator when<br />&nbsp; he submitted it as a class project in a graduate programming class.<br />&nbsp; C- is best described as a &quot;low-level&quot; programming language. In fact,<br />&nbsp; the language generally requires more C- statements than machine-code<br />&nbsp; statements to execute a given task. In this respect, it is very<br />&nbsp; similar to COBOL.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; FIFTH<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; FIFTH is a precision mathematical language in which the data types<br />&nbsp; refer to quantity. The data types range from CC, OUNCE, SHOT, and<br />&nbsp; JIGGER to FIFTH (hence the name of the language), LITER, MAGNUM and<br />&nbsp; BLOTTO. Commands refer to ingredients such as CHABLIS, CHARDONNAY,<br />&nbsp; CABERNET, GIN, VERMOUTH, VODKA, SCOTCH, and WHATEVERSAROUND. The many<br />&nbsp; versions of the FIFTH language reflect the sophistication and<br />&nbsp; financial status of its users. Commands in the ELITE dialect include<br />&nbsp; VSOP and LAFITE, while commands in the GUTTER dialect include HOOTCH<br />&nbsp; and RIPPLE. Do you remember?&nbsp; Everyone was writing &#39;C&#39; and, the<br />&nbsp; trouble was, they were pretty damn good at it. Universities got<br />&nbsp; pretty good at teaching it, too. They were turning out competent<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; - I stress the word &#39;competent&#39; - graduates at a phenomenal rate.<br />&nbsp; That&#39;s what caused the problem.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Problem?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Yes, problem. Remember when everyone wrote Cobol?<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Of course, I did too<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Well, in the beginning, these guys were like demi-gods.<br />&nbsp; Their salaries were high, and they were treated like royalty.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Those were the days, eh?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Right. So what happened? IBM got sick of it, and invested<br />&nbsp; millions in training programmers, till they were a dime a dozen.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: That&#39;s why I got out. Salaries dropped within a year, to<br />&nbsp; the point where being a journalist actually paid better.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Exactly. Well, the same happened with &#39;C&#39; programmers.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: I see, but what&#39;s the point?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Well, one day, when I was sitting in my office, I thought<br />&nbsp; of this little scheme, which would redress the balance a little. I<br />&nbsp; thought &#39;I wonder what would happen, if there were a language so<br />&nbsp; complicated, so difficult to learn, that nobody would ever be able<br />&nbsp; to swamp the market with programmers?&nbsp; Actually, I got some of the<br />&nbsp; ideas from X10, you know, X windows. That was such a bitch of a<br />&nbsp; graphics system, that it only just ran on those Sun 3/60 things.<br />&nbsp; They had all the ingredients for what I wanted. A really ridiculously<br />&nbsp; complex syntax, obscure functions, and pseudo-OO structure. Even now,<br />&nbsp; nobody writes raw X-windows code. Motif is the only way to go if you<br />&nbsp; want to retain your sanity.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: You&#39;re kidding...?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Not a bit of it. In fact, there was another problem. Unix<br />&nbsp; was written in &#39;C&#39;, which meant that any &#39;C&#39; programmer could very<br />&nbsp; easily become a systems programmer. Remember what a mainframe systems<br />&nbsp; programmer used to earn?<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: You bet I do, that&#39;s what I used to do.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: OK, so this new language had to divorce itself from Unix,<br />&nbsp; by hiding all the system calls that bound the two together so nicely.<br />&nbsp; This would enable guys who only knew about DOS to earn a decent living<br />&nbsp; too.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: I don&#39;t believe you said that...<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Well, it&#39;s been long enough, now, and I believe most people<br />&nbsp; have figured out for themselves that C++ is a waste of time but, I must<br />&nbsp; say, it&#39;s taken them a lot longer than I thought it would.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: So how exactly did you do it?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: It was only supposed to be a joke, I never thought people<br />&nbsp; would take the book seriously. Anyone with half a brain can see that<br />&nbsp; object-oriented programming is counter-intuitive, illogical and<br />&nbsp; inefficient.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: What?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: And as for &#39;re-useable code&#39; - when did you ever hear of<br />&nbsp; a company re-using its code?<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Well, never, actually, but...<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: There you are then. Mind you, a few tried, in the early<br />&nbsp; days. There was this Oregon company - Mentor Graphics, I think they<br />&nbsp; were called - really caught a cold trying to rewrite everything in<br />&nbsp; C++ in about &#39;90 or &#39;91. I felt sorry for them really, but I thought<br />&nbsp; people would learn from their mistakes.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Obviously, they didn&#39;t?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Not in the slightest. Trouble is, most companies hush-up<br />&nbsp; all their major blunders, and explaining a $30 million loss to the<br />&nbsp; shareholders would have been difficult. Give them their due, though,<br />&nbsp; they made it work in the end.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: They did?&nbsp; Well, there you are then, it proves O-O works.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Well, almost. The executable was so huge, it took five<br />&nbsp; minutes to load, on an HP workstation, with 128MB of RAM. Then it ran<br />&nbsp; like treacle. Actually, I thought this would be a major stumbling-block,<br />&nbsp; and I&#39;d get found out within a week, but nobody cared. Sun and HP were<br />&nbsp; only too glad to sell enormously powerful boxes, with huge resources<br />&nbsp; just to run trivial programs. You know, when we had our first C++<br />&nbsp; compiler, at AT&amp;T, I compiled &#39;Hello World&#39;, and couldn&#39;t believe<br />&nbsp; the size of the executable. 2.1MB<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: What? Well, compilers have come a long way, since then.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: They have?&nbsp; Try it on the latest version of g++ - you won&#39;t<br />&nbsp; get much change out of half a megabyte. Also, there are several quite<br />&nbsp; recent examples for you, from all over the world. British Telecom had<br />&nbsp; a major disaster on their hands but, luckily, managed to scrap the<br />&nbsp; whole thing and start again. They were luckier than Australian Telecom.<br />&nbsp; Now I hear that Siemens is building a dinosaur, and getting more and<br />&nbsp; more worried as the size of the hardware gets bigger, to accommodate<br />&nbsp; the executables. Isn&#39;t multiple inheritance a joy?<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Yes, but C++ is basically a sound language.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: You really believe that, don&#39;t you?&nbsp; Have you ever<br />&nbsp; sat down and worked on a C++ project?&nbsp; Here&#39;s what happens: First,<br />&nbsp; I&#39;ve put in enough pitfalls to make sure that only the most trivial<br />&nbsp; projects will work first time. Take operator overloading. At the end<br />&nbsp; of the project, almost every module has it, usually, because guys<br />&nbsp; feel they really should do it, as it was in their training course.<br />&nbsp; The same operator then means something totally different in every<br />&nbsp; module. Try pulling that lot together, when you have a hundred or<br />&nbsp; so modules. And as for data hiding. God, I sometimes can&#39;t help<br />&nbsp; laughing when I hear about the problems companies have making their<br />&nbsp; modules talk to each other. I think the word &#39;synergistic&#39; was<br />&nbsp; specially invented to twist the knife in a project manager&#39;s ribs.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: I have to say, I&#39;m beginning to be quite appalled at<br />&nbsp; all this. You say you did it to raise programmers&#39; salaries? That&#39;s<br />&nbsp; obscene.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Not really. Everyone has a choice. I didn&#39;t expect the<br />&nbsp; thing to get so much out of hand. Anyway, I basically succeeded.<br />&nbsp; C++ is dying off now, but programmers still get high salaries -<br />&nbsp; especially those poor devils who have to maintain all this crap.<br />&nbsp; You do realise, it&#39;s impossible to maintain a large C++ software<br />&nbsp; module if you didn&#39;t actually write it?<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: How come?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: You are out of touch, aren&#39;t you?&nbsp; Remember the typedef?<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Yes, of course.<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Remember how long it took to grope through the header files<br />&nbsp; only to find that &#39;RoofRaised&#39; was a double precision number?&nbsp; Well,<br />&nbsp; imagine how long it takes to find all the implicit typedefs in all<br />&nbsp; the Classes in a major project.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: So how do you reckon you&#39;ve succeeded?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Remember the length of the average-sized &#39;C&#39; project?<br />&nbsp; About 6 months. Not nearly long enough for a guy with a wife and<br />&nbsp; kids to earn enough to have a decent standard of living. Take the<br />&nbsp; same project, design it in C++ and what do you get?&nbsp; I&#39;ll tell you.<br />&nbsp; One to two years. Isn&#39;t that great? All that job security, just<br />&nbsp; through one mistake of judgement. And another thing. The universities<br />&nbsp; haven&#39;t been teaching &#39;C&#39; for such a long time, there&#39;s now a shortage<br />&nbsp; of decent &#39;C&#39; programmers. Especially those who know anything about<br />&nbsp; Unix systems programming. How many guys would know what to do with<br />&nbsp; &#39;malloc&#39;, when they&#39;ve used &#39;new&#39; all these years - and never bothered<br />&nbsp; to check the return code. In fact, most C++ programmers throw away their<br />&nbsp; return codes. Whatever happened to good ol&#39; &#39;-1&#39;?&nbsp; At least you knew you<br />&nbsp; had an error, without bogging the thing down in all that &#39;throw&#39; &#39;catch&#39;<br />&nbsp; &#39;try&#39; stuff.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: But, surely, inheritance does save a lot of time?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Does it? Have you ever noticed the difference between a<br />&nbsp; &#39;C&#39; project plan, and a C++ project plan?&nbsp; The planning stage for a<br />&nbsp; C++ project is three times as long. Precisely to make sure that<br />&nbsp; everything which should be inherited is, and what shouldn&#39;t isn&#39;t.<br />&nbsp; Then, they still get it wrong. Whoever heard of memory leaks in a<br />&nbsp; &#39;C&#39; program?&nbsp; Now finding them is a major industry. Most companies<br />&nbsp; give up, and send the product out, knowing it leaks like a sieve,<br />&nbsp; simply to avoid the expense of tracking them all down.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: There are tools...<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Most of which were written in C++.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: If we publish this, you&#39;ll probably get lynched, you<br />&nbsp; do realise that?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: I doubt it. As I said, C++ is way past its peak now, and<br />&nbsp; no company in its right mind would start a C++ project without a pilot<br />&nbsp; trial. That should convince them that it&#39;s the road to disaster. If not,<br />&nbsp; they deserve all they get. You know, I tried to convince Dennis Ritchie<br />&nbsp; to rewrite Unix in C++.<br /><br />&nbsp; Interviewer: Oh my God. What did he say?<br /><br />&nbsp; Stroustrup: Well, luckily, he has a good sense of humor. On the other hand most men know what kind of woman appeals<br />&nbsp; to them. So here is a handy guide for many of the popular programming<br />&nbsp; languages that describes what kind of women they would be if programming<br />&nbsp; languages were women.<br /><br />&nbsp; Assembler<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A female track star who holds all the world speed records. She is<br />&nbsp; hard and bumpy, and so is not that pleasant to embrace.&nbsp; She can cook<br />&nbsp; up any meal, but needs a complete and detailed recipe.&nbsp; She is not<br />&nbsp; beautiful or educated, and speaks in monosyllables like &quot;MOV, JUMP,<br />&nbsp; INC&quot;.&nbsp; She has a fierce and violent temper that make her the choice<br />&nbsp; of last resort.<br /><br />&nbsp; FORTRAN<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Your grey-haired grandmother.&nbsp; People make fun of her just because<br />&nbsp; she is old, but if you take the time to listen, you can learn from her<br />&nbsp; experiences and her mistakes.&nbsp; During her lifetime she has acquired<br />&nbsp; many useful skills in sewing and cooking (subroutine libraries) That<br />&nbsp; no younger women can match, so be thankful she is still around. She<br />&nbsp; has a notoriously bad temper and when angered will start yelling and<br />&nbsp; throwing dishes. It was mostly her bad temper that made grandad search<br />&nbsp; for another wife.<br /><br />&nbsp; COBOL<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A plump secretary.&nbsp; She talks far too much, and most of what she says<br />&nbsp; can be ignored.&nbsp; She works hard and long hours, but can&#39;t handle really<br />&nbsp; complicated jobs.&nbsp; She has a short and unpredictable temper, so no one<br />&nbsp; really likes working with her.&nbsp; She can cook meals for a huge family,<br />&nbsp; but only knows bland recipes.<br /><br />&nbsp; BASIC<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The horny divorcee that lives next door.&nbsp; Her specialty is seducing<br />&nbsp; young boys and it seems she is always readily available for them. She<br />&nbsp; teaches them many amazing things, or at least they seem amazing because<br />&nbsp; it is their) first experience.&nbsp; She is not that young herself, but<br />&nbsp; because she was their first lover the boys always remember her fondly.<br />&nbsp; Her cooking and sewing skills are mediocre, but largely irrelevant,<br />&nbsp; it&#39;s the frolicking that the boys like.&nbsp; The opinion that adults have<br />&nbsp; of Mrs.&nbsp; BASIC is varied. Shockingly, some fathers actually introduce<br />&nbsp; their own sons to this immoral woman!&nbsp; But generally the more righteous<br />&nbsp; adults try to correct the badly influenced young men by introducing them<br />&nbsp; to well behaved women like Miss Pascal.<br /><br />&nbsp; PL/I<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A bordello madam.&nbsp; She wears silk dresses, diamonds, furs and red high<br />&nbsp; heels.&nbsp; At one time she seemed very attractive, but now she just seems<br />&nbsp; overweight and tacky. Tastes change.<br /><br />&nbsp; C<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A lady executive.&nbsp; An avid jogger, very healthy, and not too<br />&nbsp; talkative. Is an good cook if you like spicy food.&nbsp; Unless you double<br />&nbsp; check everything you say (through LINT) you can unleash her fierce<br />&nbsp; temper. Her daughter C++ is still quite young and prone to tantrums,<br />&nbsp; but it seems that she will grow up into a fine young woman of milder<br />&nbsp; temper and more sophisticated character.<br /><br />&nbsp; ALGOL 60<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Your father&#39;s wartime sweetheart, petite, well proportioned, and<br />&nbsp; sweet tempered. She disappeared mysteriously during the war, but<br />&nbsp; your dad still talks about her shapely form and their steamy romance.<br />&nbsp; He never actually tasted much of her cooking.<br /><br />&nbsp; Pascal<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A grammar school teacher, and Algol 60&#39;s younger sister.&nbsp; Like her<br />&nbsp; sister she is petite and attractive, but very bossy.&nbsp; She is a good<br />&nbsp; cook but only if the recipe requires no more than one pot (module).<br /><br />&nbsp; Modula II<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A high-school teacher and Pascal&#39;s daughter.&nbsp; Very much like her<br />&nbsp; mother, but she has learned to cook with more than one pot.<br /><br />&nbsp; ALGOL 68<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Algol 60&#39;s niece.&nbsp; A high-society woman, well educated and terse.<br />&nbsp; Few men can fully understand her when she talks, and her former lovers<br />&nbsp; still discuss her mysterious personality.&nbsp; She is very choosy about her<br />&nbsp; romances and won&#39;t take just any man as her lover.&nbsp; She hasn&#39;t been seen<br />&nbsp; lately, and rumor has it that she died in a fall from an ivory tower.<br /><br />&nbsp; LISP<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She is an aging beatnik, who lives in a rural commune with her hippie<br />&nbsp; cousins SMALLTALK and FORTH.&nbsp; Many men (mostly college students) who<br />&nbsp; have visited the farmhouse,-- enthusiastically praise the natural food,<br />&nbsp; and perpetual love-ins that take place there.&nbsp; Others criticize the long<br />&nbsp; cooking times, and the abnormal sexual postures (prefix and postfix).<br />&nbsp; Although these women seldom have full-time jobs, when they do work,<br />&nbsp; their employers praise them for their imagination, but usually not for<br />&nbsp; their efficiency.<br /><br />&nbsp; APL<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A fancy caterer specializing in Greek food.&nbsp; She can cook delicious<br />&nbsp; meals for rows and rows of tables with dozens of people at each table.<br />&nbsp; She doesn&#39;t talk much, as that would just slow her work down.&nbsp; Few<br />&nbsp; people can understand her recipes, since they are in a foreign language,<br />&nbsp; and are all recorded in mirror writing.<br /><br />&nbsp; LOGO<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A grade-school art teacher.&nbsp; She is just the kind of teacher that you<br />&nbsp; wish you had when you were young.&nbsp; She is shapely and patient, but not<br />&nbsp; an interesting conversationalist.&nbsp; She can cook up delicious kiddie<br />&nbsp; snacks, but not full-course meals.<br /><br />&nbsp; LUCID &amp; PROLOG<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; These clever teenagers show a new kind of cooking skill. Described by Iusi Nogoto,<br />&nbsp; the foremost Japanese fourth generation language expert, as &quot;the<br />&nbsp; only truly elegant computer language ever devised.&quot; NULL, as it is<br />&nbsp; known, was developed by the same department that originally invented<br />&nbsp; the wrong number, the busy signal, and the phrase, &quot;The number you<br />&nbsp; have reached is not in service.&quot; NULL is the culmination of five<br />&nbsp; years of work by a team of language designers and computer science<br />&nbsp; mathematicians. The final breakthrough occurred when operating system<br />&nbsp; expert Hugh Nicks suggested that if removing GO TO&quot;s was good then<br />&nbsp; why not scrap IF statements as well, since they usually required<br />&nbsp; typing too many characters anyway. This brilliant concept was extended<br />&nbsp; through a series of complex mathematical theorems that form the basis<br />&nbsp; of the NULL language. Put in layman&quot;s terms by Sally Kahn-Vallee,<br />&nbsp; electrical engineer and PROM reader, &quot;Like we first we tossed out the<br />&nbsp; bath water, then the baby, and like finally the whole tub.&quot; The elegance<br />&nbsp; and conciseness of NULL can thus be proven to be a direct consequence<br />&nbsp; of the fact that the language as defined contains no statements at all.<br />&nbsp; While at first glance this may seem a drawback, in fact, it is a major<br />&nbsp; improvement over any other language.&nbsp; A few of the numerous reasons<br />&nbsp; are:<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 1. Highly structured constructs.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 2. Advanced data hiding techniques.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 3. A NULL compiler can&nbsp; be written first in NULL with out ever needing<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; to be written in a lower level language.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 4. Since there are no statements to compile, in fact, no compiler need<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ever be written in the first place, saving time and money.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 5. Since there will be no compilers, no new releases will ever be<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; issued hence maintenance is reduced.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 6. NULL programs are highly portable and totally machine independent.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 7. NULL programs compile and execute rapidly. An important point to<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; note is that with the addition of a small&nbsp; amount of language<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; dependent code,&nbsp; e.g. PROC/END etc.,&nbsp; all&nbsp; NULL programs can be<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; compiled by&nbsp; any other language compiler.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 8. Since there will never be new releases of NULL, all programs are<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; upwardly and downwardly compatible.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 9. NULL can be parsed top-down, bottom-up, left-right, right-left,<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; inside-out, and over-easy.<br /><br />&nbsp; 10. NULL programs are both self-documenting for clarity and self-<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; concealing for security.<br /><br />&nbsp; 11. NULL programmers are easy to find and once found can be fired<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; since they are not needed.<br /><br />&nbsp; 12. If desired, specialized NULL hardware&nbsp; could be designed<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; implementing the code in firmware. Of course, such hardware may<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; require years of development. One suggestion from Bell&quot;s VLSI<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; experts Nora&nbsp; and Andy Gates was to take an existing available<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; chip and remove all&nbsp; the instructions except NOP.&nbsp; While this<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; should work in theory,&nbsp; they acknowledged&nbsp; that it is probably<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; not the most efficient implementation.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; These are just a few of the many&nbsp; ways NULL is superior to all<br />&nbsp; current computer languages.             <description><![CDATA[<p>I recently finished setting up configuring my system for multibooting.&nbsp; I am running Windows XP, Windows Vista and CentOS Linux on my machine at the moment.</p><p>I started with a fresh disk and set&nbsp;5 partitions.</p><p>0) Win Xp system - 20 GB - NTFS</p><p>1) Win Vista System - 20 GB - NTFS</p><p>2) Linux /boot - 100 MB</p><p>3) Linux / - 20GB - 100 MB</p><p>4) Rest of drive as an NTFS data partition for Xp and Vista to share</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I have a second disk that is I am running my linux swap and /home on as well as more NTFS data space but this is completely optional.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>My advice is to first install XP. Fairly straight forward put it on the first partition on the disk and let it in stall normally.</p><p>Install Windows Vista to the second partition, it will automaticly change the boot information on the Windows XP partition to give you the choice to boot Vista or XP</p><p>Finally install Linux.&nbsp; Create your boot partition and then let GRUB over write the MBR (this is were I differ from a great number of other guides).&nbsp; What I do is I have the primary option to choose to boot to&nbsp;Windows or CentOS and then if I choose Windows I can select the flavor I want to use.</p><p>This is probably over kill but I wanted to try and do it and now I have three envs at home that I can play in.</p>]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>I find it interesting that two of my first year courses have already set a game development project.&nbsp; Beyond the obvious it will keep students interested what other reasons are there behind setting these out?</p><p>&nbsp;In my own personal experience, game creation is a complicated and involved process. Game&nbsp;develpment forces the&nbsp;dev&nbsp;into a critical thinking paradgim: tons of math (statistics and probability), systems engineering (got to make the rules and make them fair)&nbsp;and other concerns about balance and avoiding dominant strategies.&nbsp; Game creation forces the student to think beyond the standard &quot;float cash, cost, change;&quot; paradigm that I have run accross in many books/courses that have to do with programming and software eningeering.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>While you are thinking about games I invite you to visit my inprogress MMO game at <a href="http://scarletrazor.com/">http://scarletrazor.com</a> it is still early beta but I have the minimal function active and will be expanding the framework into a more complex game as time allows.&nbsp; It is free to sign up and play so have fun if you are inclined.</p>]]></description>
