The Future of Reputation" by Daniel Solove, Andrew Adams lent me this book and I understand why he did.
The book is about Digital Identity but particularly about the reputation that is associated with a person's digital presence. I commented earlier about one aspect in a post called: Finding someone by Googling.
The first third of the book is based round examples of where harm has occurred to people due to their own or other people's content in the digital world.
The middle section was mainly about the legal position in the US, and so I found this less interesting.
The final third bought the ideas together and presented some very interesting points. There are a few sentences in a sub-section headed Education that I would want to share:
"At the end of the day, if people want to expose themselves to the world, there is only so much that can be done to stop them. Self-disclosure is nevertheless a problem, as teenagers and college students are often revealing too much information and latter regretting that they cannot take it back. Education is the most viable way to shape people's choices in this regard."
This fits very closely with my own thinking and that of some of my colleagues. It would be an interesting topic to address within the unconference on My Digital Self.
