Shirley Williams :: Blog :: Communication problems Part 2

May 08, 2009

My communication problems continue.
The phone line and broadband at home still not working, talktalk do not answer their phone, but have acknowledged our logging of the problem on their website - which says they will respond in 2 days.
So last night went back to the university for Connected Futures workshop conference call and field trip to Jokaydia in SL.
The CPsquare bridge has problems, I could get in via Skype but could not be heard, several others were in the same state. Tried the 0870 number for the bridge - but that kept giving me the number unobtainable signal. Eventually John rang me and patched me in, so I could talk about Muvenation and LLL3D, while Jo Kay's technical problems were sorted.
We then moved into SL, where I know voice doesn't work from the university, across the group most were able to hear, some could talk, but at least one could do neither, so we kept up a stream in the chat reort what Jo was telling us and picking out questions.
All in all the field trip was a great experience, and I guess handling communication problems is an important aspect of a connected futures.

I am wondering when we will be back online at home, and I am grateful for my mobile broadband dongle, even if it isn't up to running SL. The next Connected Futures conference call is due at a time when I will be in a hotel in Brussels, I've requested a room with wi fi access, any bets if I will be able to get online?

  1. Hi, I'm not a great broadband expert but saw your post - maybe if you have nice neighbours and there is sufficient coverage, you could connect through wifi to their broadband if they have it?

We now have working phone and broadband at home.

Eventually they dealt with it fairly professionally - texting that the engineer was going to the exchange and then phoning to tell us it was fixed.

Bit of a shame they couldn't have done it quicker. But have had much worse experiences, and they did respond within 2 days of us logging the request.
