Shirley Williams :: Blog :: Blackboard woes

October 11, 2009

I wanted to have a RSS feed into one of my Blackboard courses. I have vague memories at the point of the last Blackboard update it was possible in a contrived manner with the help of an administrator a course instructor could add a feed. But Icouldn't find any indication of this functionality in our system, so I resorted to Google. I found a post dealing with embedding a feed into Blackboard at digital media cookbook. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. The steps used a third party utility - Feed2JS, which again was clear to follow.

Using Firefox on my EeePC I easily added the feed and it all worked properly.

The next day I accessed the link via IE on a Windows machine and the feed didn't show. I thought I would edit it and add something to show that something was missing, but having accessed the control panel with the edit options I made a change and then when I saved it the edit buttons disappeared. They were also missing when I returned to the EeePC , via Twitter I contacted a couple of other people with instructor status and established despite a plethora of browsers they couldn't access the edit options. Eventually I managed to persuade Blackboard to let me see the options (I turned javascript off and used the back button) and I have re-editted. I still need to check how this looks under other browsers.

Keywords: Blackboard, Feed2JS, RSS, UTFS
